St Emilion Wine History And Varieties

by Nichole Cunningham

St Emilion wine are well known French products which include an array of varieties including cabernets, merlots, Bordeauxs, and others. It is the oldest wine district in France and covers over 13,000 acres in the northeast Bordeaux region of the country. It is also known as the Right Bank. The limestone, sandy and gravel soils of the area have helped produce the rich and intense flavors of the deep reds.

Visits to Europe should always include tours of French wine country, especially this particular area. There are many wineries to visit, historical sites and restaurants that serve the area's bottled specialties. Local tour companies are always available to show visitors the area and all it has to offer.

Pairing these wines with your favorite dishes is simple and these full-bodied red wines go well with lamb, salmon, wild game, grilled items and ribs. They are also a favorite companion of many cheeses and cheese appetizers, making them a wonderful happy hour beverage. Invite friends and family to your home and hold a tasting with the different varieties to get a real feel for the quality of these French products.

In 1855, these varieties were not classified as were other quality wines of the area. In 1955, they were reclassified into three groups. These groupings, premier grand cru classe' A, premier grand cru classe' B and grand cru classe', are now updated every decade. They have achieved a very prominent footing in the classical wine world of Europe.

Popular wineries include the Chateaus of Pavie, Ausone, Coutet, Cheval Blanc and La Mondette. Don't forget to visit the sights in the city of St. Emilion itself which features wine shops, upscale restaurants which pour local wines, and other memorable sites. Citizens are very proud to show off their city and surrounding areas and all they have to offer.

Merlots and cabernets have been found to be a very healthy addition to any diet. An ingredient, resveratrol, contributes to heart health and longevity. The benefits of drinking one or two glasses every day may help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, reduce breast cancer risks, and protect against heart damage. Studies are still in progress but it is obvious that drinking red varieties has definite health benefits if not consumed in excess.

Both inexpensive and very expensive bottles are available in shops and upscale liquor stores everywhere. Purchase them as gifts for friends and family, especially for special occasions such as retirement parties, weddings and anniversaries. Tuck one in a gift basket along with gourmet cheeses and crackers for thoughtful housewarming present.

A St Emilion wine purchase is sure to make your meal, party, or gathering extra special. Serve it with an elegant dinner, along with buffet items or as a pre-dinner offering. The quality of the products will shine through and your friends and family will be sure to be impressed by your impeccable taste and knowledge of French vintages.
